With roughly 3/4 of the 2046 season in the proverbial books, the Seattle Storm have a record of 75-55 and sit in first place in their division. Despite that success, Seattle GM Nathan Eagan knew that some moves needed to be made to improve the team and get it ready for the stretch run. Eagan seemed particularly focused on addressing the team's bullpen, whose 4.43 ERA was 13th in the Frick League. Today, Seattle made its move, acquiring Bron Cortez and Antonio Ruiz from Long Beach. Seattle gave up a number of prospects but also, most significantly, sent longtime standout Ken Walter to Long Beach. It appears that the motive for including Walter in the deal was almost entirely financial, as Seattle had looked to be in danger of scraping up against the salary cap next season, with Walter potentially accounting for nearly $20 million of Seattle's cap space.
This trade will help to alleviate Seattle's looming cap crunch, and will also upgrade Seattle's backup catcher, as Bayou Hakki has disappointed in his two years in Seattle. Additionally, Cortez is expected to play a significant role in Seattle's bullpen for the rest of the season, and scouts speculate that his ability to generate strikeouts will be invaluable for a Seattle bullpen that can, at times, rely on pitching to contact. Only time will tell if this trade will benefit Seattle, and, of course, the development of the prospects Seattle traded will impact any sort of evaluation, but in the meantime, Seattle fans will miss Ken Walter and hope that the increased salary cap space justifies his departure.
