Chasing The Storm 2045-6 Negative Performances

Post by njherdfan » Mon Feb 01, 2021 8:53 am

While we just reviewed the 2045 Storm's positive performances, it's obvious that not everything can be a positive on a team that finished without a winning record. With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the performances that disappointed Seattle fans this year.

It might feel odd to see him here, but Pedro Diaz was a cause for some concern for Seattle fans moving forward. When the Storm signed Diaz, they were expecting roughly what they've received; 2.5-3 WAR in a season and consistent performance. What was unforeseen, however, is how his numbers would be achieved. Diaz's calling card has always been his defense, and that continued in his first season in Seattle. This season, however, Diaz's defensive numbers were much worse than they've been at any point in the past. Between 2044 and 2045, Diaz's Zone Rating fell by 18.1 runs. Diaz's WAR remained high because he improved his offensive numbers, but Seattle fans and staff are wondering what, exactly, went wrong with his defense. Diaz is only 26 years old, and scouts don't report any sort of physical decline, but it's still concerning that his performance was so much worse. Seattle fans will need to hope that Diaz can bounce back and become the elite defensive shortstop he's always been in the past.

On the mound ,Hector Marquez also performed well below his career numbers. Before this year, Marquez only had one season with a FIP above 4; this year, his FIP was 4.94, driven in large part by an inability to keep the ball in the ballpark, as he surrendered 39 home runs. Seattle fans must hope that those numbers are an anomaly instead of the start of a trend, because Marquez will be a key part of Seattle's rotation in the future, and if his home run rate returns to normal while his other peripherals remain strong, it seems likely that he will improve on his 2045 performance.
