Through 102 games, the Storm have a rather uninspiring record of 46-56. While they have slightly underperformed their run differential, the underlying numbers make it clear that this team is not particularly good. While we last look at Seattle's offense, today we're going to take a look at Seattle's pitching staff to determine if there's anything we can learn from that analysis.
At first glance, a glaring problem becomes pretty obvious: Seattle's starting pitching hasn't been very good. Only one starter, Yasir Bin Lufti, has an ERA under 5. It's very difficult to have any sort of success when that's the case. Last year, Seattle's pitching staff was boosted by its solid infield defense. This year, Seattle's defense has again been above-average, but the results from the pitchers have not been. One big problem has been the staff's inability to keep the ball in the park and let the pitching staff work. Seattle's starters have also been walking far too many hitters, with new starter Tadamichi Yoshida being particularly bad. Of course, scouts warned that Yoshida would struggle with his control, and that has been proven correct, and it's unclear if there is any reason for optimism.
Perhaps the only true bright spot of the pitchers has been Jarred Perkins, who has been fantastic out of the bullpen, with an ERA of 1.91 and 9 saves. If Seattle is going to have any success this season, Perkins will be a big part of it. New acquisition Simon Bautista has been a pleasant surprise, and has posted an ERA of 3.32 and a FIP of 2.76. Seattle fans hope that he will play a major role in the Storm's pen for the foreseeable future.
