Chasing The Storm 2042-4: Rookie Report

Post by njherdfan » Wed May 13, 2020 1:58 pm

When things are going as poorly as things have been for Seattle so far this season, sometimes it can be helpful, or at least therapeutic, to look at how some of the younger players are performing, in order to convince yourself that better things are on the horizon. With that in mind, let's take a look at how some of Seattle's youngest players are performing and what, if anything, we think it might mean for the future.

At the plate, several Seattle rookies have had notable seasons. The rookie who's played the most for Seattle so far has been Gary Wright, and he has handled himself admirably. He currently has an OPS of .813, which is good for a wRC of 100. Wright has been particularly good against lefties, and he will likely be a mainstay in Seattle's lineups for the foreseeable future. A very pleasant surprise for Seattle fans has been Edward Leialoha. Leialoha had been excellent in AAA so far this year, and Seattle's trade of Sean Maguire freed up second base for Leialoha. Although it's only been 13 games, Leialoha shows no signs of relinquishing the position. He has an OPS of 1.179, which is either unsustainable or an indication that he's one of the best hitters of all time. Even assuming the former, there's no reason for Seattle fans not to be excited about him, and expect him to form a double play combination with Eric Jones for the foreseeable future. Finally, it's time to talk about Alexander Julyan. Julyan, who has long been Seattle's top prospect, made his major league debut this year. It did not go well. In 23 games and 87 at-bats, Julyan had an OPS .494. That's not great. However, some Seattle fans have reported that this might have actually spurred his development, and there are reports that he's a more complete player now in AAA. Seattle fans will find out for sure next season, when he's up for good.

On the mound, Seattle welcomed prospect Yasir bin Lufti. At this point, it's fair to describe his performance as a mixed bag. He has an ERA over 5 but a FIP- of 99 and opponents have a BABIP of .375 against him. We'll have to see if there's still room for growth for him, and what comes next in his career.

Seems like it'll be now or never for Julyan in 2043.
