Chasing The Storm 2042-3: 140 Games In

Post by njherdfan » Wed May 13, 2020 1:41 pm

In the real world, we're all faced with an unprecedented crisis. In the virtual world, the Seattle Storm have just been really, really bad. As things currently stand, they have a record of 54-86 and have been outscored by over 100 runs. Clearly, to get to this point, a lot of things have had to go really, really wrong. Let's take a look at just a few of those things, along with Seattle's best performers so far this season.

TOP PERFORMERS: It almost goes without saying, but Todd Rice has been fantastic so far this season. Despite an injury, he has put up an .870 OPS and he leads the team with 2.4 WAR, and he has walked more than he's struck out yet again, which is always fun. Not to be outdone (or, to be only outdone by a little) Aires Penharanda has also been quite good, as he's played superb defense in left field and has an OPS of .810. While his offense is slightly down from last season, there's still quite a bit for Seattle fans to like from him this year. On the mound, it's quite difficult to be particularly optimistic about anyone, which is, unsurprisingly, a big part of why Seattle has been so bad this year. As a general rule, if you can't say that any of your pitchers have exceeded expectations, you're probably having a long season.

WORST PERFORMERS: This could be a very long list! After a solid 2041 season in which he posted a 119 wRC+, Ruben Rodriguez has been much worse so far this year, as he has a wRC+ of 83 and has produced -.5 WAR. On the mound, there are plenty of people to blame. Juan Rubio, after being dominant last season, has an ERA of 5.93 and has blown 8 saves. Gordon Graves continues to be terrible. Luther Summers once again has an ERA over 5. Ultimately it's unclear what, if anything, Seattle fans can expect out of the rotation next year. Since it appearse that injuries have significantly reduced Ken Walters' future production, it's not clear if Seattle fans can count on him for anything. It seems likely that Seattle might need to turn to the free agent market this offseason to find pieces that can play a role in the rotation next season.
