Chasing The Storm 2042-1: 30 Games In

Post by njherdfan » Thu Apr 09, 2020 9:50 am

Now that we're thirty games into the 2042 season, it seems like now is as good of a time as any to take a look at this year's Seattle Storm. Through 30 games, Seattle has a record of 13-17 and a run differential of -12. Let's take a look at what's gone right and what's gone wrong for Seattle so far.

TOP PERFORMERS: At the plate, Seattle's offense continues to be led by center fielder Todd Rice. As of today, Rice leads the Storm with a 142 wRC+, and he has only struck out 8 times on the young season in nearly 150 at-bats. Rice's metronomic consistency has been a welcome presence in Seattle's lineup for the past few seasons, and Seattle's fans surely are hoping for it to continue. Jose Estrada, who was a late signing for the Storm, has also been a welcome addition to Seattle's offense. He currently has a 129 wRC+, and he leads Seattle with 6 home runs. On the mound, San-Pao Shang has been a welcome surprise for the Seattle faithful. In 5 starts and 37.1 innings, Shang has an ERA of 1.45. The more cynical Seattle fans point out that Shang's FIP is 4.38, so some regression is likely, but Seattle fans will enjoy his stellar performances while they can.

WORST PERFORMERS: At the plate, Seattle has had plenty of disappointments, but it's safe to say that no one has been more of a letdown than Eric Jones. Last year as a rookie Jones had a wRC+ of 98, which led Seattle fans to hope that better things were in store this year. So far, that has not been the case, as Jones has an OPS of .602 and a wRC+ of only 46. For those looking for reasons for optimism, it's perhaps worth noting that Jones's BABIP is only .182, so some improvement seems likely. It's fair to say that pretty much every Seattle pitcher has been disappointing thus far, but Jarred Perkins, who is coming off a dominant 2041, has been particularly poor on the mound. After posting a 2.51 FIP last season, his current FIP is 5.40 and his ERA is 7.59. Scouts report that his stuff is just as good as it always has been, so Seattle fans have no choice but to hope for improvement in the near future.
