It seems like just yesterday that Seattle's most pressing question was what would happen at the shortstop position for the rest of the season. The underperformance of both Jay Garrick and Rubem Bordonhos had Seattle fans clamoring for the promotion of top prospect Eric Jones. Jones, who is only 20 years old, had been consistently dominating in the minor leagues, and Seattle fans were eager to see what he could do at the top level of competition. Despite Seattle fans' excitement, however, Seattle's management seemed determined to give Jones a bit more time to develop.
Those plans all changed last week when Jay Garrick suffered a long-term injury. With a hole at the shortstop position, Seattle's hand was forced and Eric Jones will be making his debut in Seattle. After only 17 games in AAA Kalamazoo (where he posted a .958 OPS), Jones will be heading to the bigs. When asked if Jones will be eased into the starting lineup, Seattle manager Trey Williams had a simple response: "no." Seattle wasn't going to promote Jones without putting him in the lineup, so it appears that Seattle fans will get their wish, as the youngest player in the lineup will become an everyday regular. It wouldn't be surprising if Jones has a bit of an adjustment period, but this is still a very exciting time for Seattle's fans as they wait to see what Jones can do.
