Chasing The Storm 2041-3: 61 Games In

As the title indicates, Seattle is 61 games into its regular season, and Seattle's fans, by and large, have reason to be [leased. Thus far, Seattle's record sits at 33-28, and they've scored 29 more runs than they've allowed. Let's take a look at some of Seattle's best and worst performers, and think about what might come next.

TOP PERFORMERS: To the surprise of no one, Todd Rice remains on this list, because he continues to absolutely mash opposing pitching. Although his OPS has now dipped below 1.000 (to .992) he has continued to be an absolutely monster at the top of the lineup for Seattle. What's more, he has only struck out 12 times, which seems almost impossible. While many Seattle fans had high hopes for Todd Rice, it's fair to say that expectations for Aires Penharanda were much lower. The 21-year old was relatively unknown heading into this season, and he started the year on the DL, so no one knew what to expect. He has taken the league by, pardon the pun, storm, as his 1.010 OPS is tops on the team, and he has also provided spectacular defense.

On the mound, Hector Marquez has been Seattle's standard-bearer While other pitchers have struggled with returns from injury or a general lack of talent, Marquez has been Seattle's best pitcher. Although he does not lead the team in ERA, his FIP is significantly better than anyone else's on the team, and he has been a key part of Seattle's success.

WORST PERFORMERS: At the plate, it's pretty clear that Seattle's biggest problem has been its shortstops. Both Jay Garrick and Rubem Bordonhos have been nothing short of awful at the dish, and they have, it's fair to say, been dragging down Seattle's offense. On the mound, Gordon Graves has been Seattle's worst pitcher, with an ERA of 7.59. If there's anything to be optimistic about, it's the fact that Graves has a FIP of "only" 4.76, so perhaps some positive bounceback will occur!

What's next: As we mentioned, Seattle's shortstops have been terrible this year. One of Seattle's top prospects, Eric Jones, just happens to play shortstop. Jones started the year in single-A Lake City, but he quickly showed that he was too advanced for the league. The process repeated itself at double-AA Juneau, and Jones, who is only 20, is now tearing the cover off the ball at AAA Kalamazoo. Seattle fans are impatiently waiting for Jones to be called up, and Seattle's scouts have indicated that they think he could be ready to play at the highest level. At this point, barring a quick turnaround from Seattle's other shortstops, it's only a matter of time before we see Jones wearing the purple of the Storm.
