Going into this season, Seattle's fans had some expectations of competing for a playoff spot. That has not been the case. Currently, Seattle's record sits at 57-95. To put it mildly, that is not going to cut it. Understanding everything that went wrong this season for Seattle is certainly going to be a long and painful process, but it needs to start somewhere. For this first installation of attempting to figure some things out, we're going to look at Seattle's pitching performances, and figure out who the biggest culprits are.

First, through no fault of his own, Ken Walter could be viewed as a disappointment, as he suffered a torn elbow ligament and will miss 9 months. Walter is only 27 years old, but Seattle fans are beginning to worry; he has suffered two major, season-ending injuries in two consecutive years and some people worry that his skills are beginning to erode. Will Walter be able to recover from his injuries and anchor Seattle's rotation? At this point, it's hard to be too confident in that.

The rest of the rotation, with the exception of Hector Marquez, has also been terrible. Gordon Graves, recently signed to a big contract, has an ERA over 6. So does Zoraide Anto, while Luther Summers has an ERA of over 5. Needless to say, it's very difficult to win games when your starting rotation pitches so poorly.

Weirdly enough, Seattle's bullpen has been pretty good; Paul Farrell, who was signed to be Seattle's closer, has rebounded nicely after a horrific start. Juan Rubio has also been inserted into the closer's role and has not embarrassed himself.

Ultimately, it's difficult to see too many silver linings from this year's pitching performances. Ultimately, Seattle fans will need to hope that this is just a collection of horrible seasons from otherwise good pitchers, and hope for improvement next year. Time will tell if that is a reasonable hope.

Two big injuries is hard to handle.
