While Seattle's regular season might have ended in disappointment, it's always nice to look at some of the things that went right in a given year. With that in mind, let's take a look at some superlatives from Seattle's 2039 season. First, let's look at Seattle's rookie of the year.
This one is actually pretty easy. Todd Rice was called up roughly halfway through the season as he was tearing up AAA pitching. Scouts and fans alike wondered if Rice would be able to keep up his good work; it was a consensus opinion that he would struggle, at least a bit. It's fair to say that that consensus was wrong.
Rice, Seattle's first round pick in 2038, simply had a rookie season for the ages, as he had a .384/415/601 triple-slash for an OPS of 1016. He did all of this as a 20 year old, mind you. His work led to 4.2 WAR in only 92 games, and he also added 18 steals while striking out only 17 times in 396 at bats and playing a respectable center field.
In short, there's almost nothing bad you can say about Rice's rookie season, except that, if he had been called up earlier, he might have been able to make a bigger difference for Seattle's 2039 campaign. Putting that aside, Seattle's fans are justifiably excited about what's to come from their young phenom.
