Chasing The Storm 2039-1 Offseason Review

Post by njherdfan » Wed Jun 26, 2019 9:56 am

Heading into the offseason, there were a number of questions facing the Seattle Storm. After a very successful 2038 season, the Storm were determined to make another run to the playoffs, but they had to decide the best way to approach that. Let's take a look at how Seattle's offseason went.

Seattle's first move was also one of its most painful. Longtime stalward Alfredo Contreras fell off of a proverbial cliff, and his contract had become an albatross. In order to get rid of that contract, Seattle packaged Contreras with promising shortsop Juan Medrano. Seattle knows that Medrano might develop into a promising starter, but they felt that Conteras' contract would have precluded the Storm from accomplishing their goals.

Heading into free agency, Seattle had to decide whether it should retain Lloyd Braun. Ultimately, the Storm decided to let Braun depart to Atlantic City, and signed Sean Maguire to replace him. While there was some hesitancy about giving Maguire a 4 year contract, Seattle was confident that he could provide quality play at an important position. Seattle also signed Antonio Cruz, with the belief that he can play a role as a key reserve in multiple spots. Finally, Seattle signed relief pitcher Sean Spits who will play a key role in the bullpen.

Seattle's lineup appears largely set, but there are now open questions about what Seattle's rotation will look like. There have been rumors that Gordon Graves will fill one spot, but the 5th spot is currently up in the air. Look for more details to emerge once the season starts.

Contreras was a great Storm. Loved to see him. Hate to see him fall like that, but that's baseball. Now I feel sorry for him having to play out the string in Loserville.
