Chasing the Storm 2037-7: Seattle says goodbye to Juan Escobar

Post by njherdfan » Fri Mar 01, 2019 10:11 am

There was not a dry eye in the house yesterday when Seattle Storm first baseman Juan Escobar announced his retirement. Escobar retires as, without question, the best player in franchise history, and one of the best hitters of all time. Escobar will finish his storied career with 3,412 hits, an OPS of .910, and the franchise record in just about every counting stat except for home runs, where he sits in 2nd place, with 496, only 9 behind Jorge Rodriguez's 505. One of the many impressive things about Escobar is that he was still a productive hitter until his unexpected retirement; this past season, he had an OPS of .811 and and hit 22 home runs. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would pass 500, and Rodriguez's career mark, next season, but Escobar chose to go out on his own terms.

By now many Storm fans have forgotten that Escobar didn't start his career with Seattle. He was actually signed by Yellow Springs as an international free agent, before Seattle GM Nathan Eagan made what he called "the best trade of my career" and brought Escobar to Seattle in exchange for Esteban Benitez.

Escobar made his debut as a 20 year old, started hitting with a vengeance, and never stopped. In his illustrious career he won an incredible five Silk awards. In one particular impressive 3-year stretch, from 2028 to 2030, Escobar led the league in average, slugging, OPS, and WAR in each year. He was "only" 2nd in OBP in 2029.

Sadly for Seattle fans, Escobar and the Storm were never able to capture a championship, but there can be no doubt that Escobar is the best player in franchise history, and no one will ever wear the number 45 again.
