Heartbreak. That was the recurring theme as the last players filed out of Seattle’s clubhouse, as the Storm saw their fantastic 2036 season, and the 96-66 record, come to an abrupt end as the Storm lost in 5 games to the Long Beach Surfers in the Geoghegan Round. While no one in Seattle was expecting an easy series, they were uniformly confident that they would be able to emerge victorious.
After a frustrating game 1 loss and a game 2 win, Seattle lost a very frustrating game 3 2-1, as they left 11 runners on base. The lack of clutch hitting would be a recurring theme for Seattle as the series reached its conclusion. A 4-0 Seattle win set the stage for a decisive game 5 in Seattle, with star pitcher Alfredo Contreras on the mound.
Once again, Seattle struggled to drive in runners in key situations, as they left 10 men on base. However, with a late rally, Seattle took a 6-5 lead into the 9th inning. Axel Angwin, who had been so excellent all season, came on to close the game, but he wasn’t up to the task, and Seattle’s bullpen ended up surrendering 5 runs to make it 10-6. Despite a valiant comeback effort, Seattle fell 10-9.
With the loss, Juan Escobar will go another season without winning a championship, and this offseason will present a few questions. While most of Seattle’s starters will be returning, Escobar will be a free agent. It’s unclear if he will return, or even if Seattle will find a spot for him. Jesus Gonzalez, who was Seattle’s best player during the regular season, also can opt out of his deal. After the game, he offered no clue about what he was thinking.
After a few months, fans will be able to appreciate how well Seattle played in 2036. For now, though, they’re going to be in a lot of pain.

Losing that kind of series is a gut-punch. Believe me, I know.
