Chasing The Storm 2035-1 A Look at the Expansion Draft

Post by njherdfan » Wed May 30, 2018 2:10 pm

Heading into the 2034 expansion draft, Seattle fans had a number of questions, but the main question on everyone’s mind was: How could the Storm decide not to protect Juan Escobar? Ultimately, Seattle GM Nathan Eagan says, the decision was made that it was unlikely that another team would want to pick up Escobar’s contract, which is over $18 million each of the next 2 seasons. Eagan also notes, however, that Seattle fans would have been furious with him if Escobar had been selected. Ultimately, Escobar was not selected, and Seattle fans can breathe again. Seattle did lose 3 players in the expansion draft, though. Ramon Vela, Abe Colbert, Jr., and Maher Haws will be headed to Boise and Wichita.

Eagan said that he will miss Vela, who had previously looked like a potential 3rd baseman in the organization; however, with the acquisition of Jesus Gonzalez, there was no clear path for Vela to obtain playing time. Colbert was acquired in a trade last season, and while he certainly has a lot of talent, it’s unclear what role he would have played in Seattle. Additionally, his selection frees up over $7 million in salary for the Storm. Finally, Maher Haws will head to Wichita. Haws is a defense-first (and second, and third) player, who can perhaps provide outfield depth. He had never appeared in the majors for the Storm. Ultimately, Seattle fans can breathe easily knowing that Juan Escobar will remain in a Seattle uniform for the immediate future.

I think a lot of the protection lists were made with crossed fingers that the big contracts would scare away the preditors.
