In many ways, Seattle’s season has been a disaster. With few exceptions, everyone has been underachieving. Despite all of the gloom enveloping Seattle, however, Storm fans had a bright spot in Kalamazoo, as center fielder Jin-guo Long was quickly emerging as one of Seattle’s top prospects. Long was known for his other-worldly defense, and for his ability to get on base. This season, he had a .448 OBP, and many scouts and front-office insiders were speculating that he might be called up to Seattle before the end of the year.
There’s no chance of that happening now, as Long has shocked the Storm, and the baseball world, by abruptly deciding to retire, and pursue his dream of playing college basketball. When he was reached for comment, Seattle GM Nathan Eagan didn’t mince words: “We’re both surprised and disappointed. We obviously respect anyone’s decision if they don’t want to play any longer, but we never received any warning from Jin-guo, and it’s hard to believe that he just decided on this today.” Eagan said that, moving forward, Long would be welcome to return to Seattle, but no one around Long viewed that as likely to occur. With his retirement, more questions are raised about what Seattle’s offense will look like next year.

With the summer Olympics just around the corner in 2036, I think he made the right choice for his nation
