Ex-First Round Pick Included In Perez Deal
March 7, 2065: Catalina Island – News today comes that the paperwork on the Austin deal has now been finalized, and it’s true the young Benji Amberman has been traded to Austin as part of the package that netted the team first baseman Arturo Pérez.
“We waited to make that official so that Benji could finish their time at Pain Island,” said assistant GM Monica Green at a beach luau yesterday afternoon. The complete deal looks like this: Amberman, relievers António Salazar and Masami Kichida, and $3M went to Austin in return for Perez, a 23-year-old first sacker who posted more than 3 WAR last season.
The deal bring to an end the long and grinding road that has been Amberman’s path since being a bonus-baby draft pick in 2057. At the time, Amberman was touted as a possible Hall of Famer—which is a touch burden to put on a 16-year-old, but here we are. Life is life. The third baseman struggled through the first several seasons of his professional career, with scouts downgrading him along the way so far they were overtaken on the organization’s depth harts by Ken Haupt.
“Benji Amberman is still a prospect,” said Misty Morgan, baseball anchor at Forever Land Sports Network, who also attended the team’s charity luau. “With news that his glove came to life in the team’s development lab, Austin may have gotten a real gem, to be honest. Given the improvement I’m hearing about, there’s even some chance Amberman could work as shortstop in some situations.”
“I hate to see Benji leave the organization,” said GM Ron Collins. “They’ve always been a favorite of mine, but the numbers weren’t numbering for us, and it was time to move on.”
Perez is hitting .286 so far in early spring camp, with a homer and a pair of doubles. The club is currently getting him reps in left field, but he’s expected to spend the bulk of the season in his home at first base.
