Yesterday we took a look at some of Seattle's top minor league offensive performers; today, we're gonig to move to take a look at those on the mound. In the past, Seattle's strength has been its pitching staff and, more specifically, its starting rotation. Needless to say, that was not the case this season. Between injuries and poor performance, it's fair to say taht this year was an incredible disappointment at the big league level. Now, let's take a look and see if there's anything more positive in the minors.
Seattle's top pitching prospect Yasir bin Lutfi had an up-and-down season in Single A Lake City. In 26 starts he threw 194 innings and had an ERA under 4, which is excellent news. However, he only struck out 133 hitters and did not display the overpowering stuff he's rumored to possess. Next year Lutfi is expected to head to AA, where he will be tested by better hitters.
Another pitcher that Seattle has been rumored to like is Jarred Perkins. He has been described as future 4th or 5th starter, and he did nothing to dispel those notions this past season, as he made 28 respectable starts. Scouts are unanimous that while Perkins has 2 excellent pitches, he needs to improve his alternate offerings in order to eventually become an above-average starter for Seattle.
