LB P-T: Surfers excited to steal Moore

Post by jcrmoon42 » Fri Oct 12, 2012 4:06 pm

The Long Beach system already has some very good outfield prospects in RVD O'Herlihy, Harvey Newton and John Jordan. Sitting at the bottom of the first round, a position the Surfers are unaccustomed to, they weren't sure what kind of player would be available. Hoping for a decent pitching prospect, the Surfers waited their turn and didn't find the pitcher they were looking for. However, when they looked over on the other side for offensive players, they found 18-year old Matt Moore, who has been playing for Home Depot the last couple of seasons. The Surfers gladly snapped him up in spite of their depth at the outfield positions.

A high school All Star last season, Moore is a collection of contradictions. Extremely intelligent, he is also an underachiever due to a very poor work ethic. Extremely loyal to his team, he is also extremely greedy. 6'2" tall and a musculer 205 pounds, he is a banjo-hitter with minimal power. With all of that, he also has the potential to be an excellent leadoff man or #2 hitter with an impeccable batting eye and an allergic reaction to strikeouts. He's got gap power and will hit for average at the big league level. He won't knock your socks off with his speed or defense, but both are acctable. The challenge he may face in the future is that Harvey Newton will be kept to left field which will also be Moore's best position. This could mean one of the two will be dealt in the future. In the meantime, the Surfers feel like they got a steal in this draft.

That's a heck of a pick for that late in the draft. Kind of a poor man's Sam Sung.

I think those 3 homers he hit in 2005 were off of my grandpa;) All kidding aside he has some great upside. Those high schoolers can surprise once in a while...
