catalina island, california
they're all arriving today, via boat, jet, helicopter and the come together door, the 67 players from the long beach organization that have been selected to participate in the 2060 spring training. catalina island is abuzz with bba fever this february, as the bikini krill, led by gm @ronco again return to share the island with long beach. fifty-nine krill will be attending spring training for collins' club, and we anticipate the first friendly scrimmage to take place later this week before the real spring games begin next week.
among the attendees for long beach are two rule 5 draftees, Larry Challen and Ekela Kirila, and 27 non-roster invitees. notable from that group are recent first rounder Juan Simpson, top prospect Elia Lulani, two-way prospect Héctor Herrera, and old friend Carlito Brigante. last year's rule 5 mega-success story, Rodney Kessel arrives with the job at the hot corner all but guaranteed to his. the 25 year old switch hitter had an ops+ of 121 last year, and in combination with league average defense, contributed 3.4 war to a long beach team that reached the playoffs.
overshadowing pretty much everyone however, is the newest member of the long beach surfers, UNEM PLOID. the 33-year-old superstar was signed by the team just two weeks ago on a four year, $56m deal, with an additional $4m signing bonus, and two team options for $12m each, for a possible total of $84m before performance bonuses. it has also been reported that the deal includes a player opt-out after the 2061 season, but this has not been confirmed by the team.
the right-handed ploid is coming off of his second straight season leading the frick league in average and on-base percentage (.380/.441). he has been a fixture in the sacramento lineup since 2049, and the bba world was shocked when it was announced that he would be joining division rival long beach. the team hopes that ploid only gets better over the coming seasons, playing his home games in a much more hitter-friendly park. sports books are anticipating a power surge from ploid, with over/under numbers for total home runs in the 16-20 range.
the surfers also brought back 31-year-old starter António Báldez, who will be looking to bounce back from a difficult season that saw him traded twice.
