2054.05 - Shark Bites - September 2, 2054

INJURIES, CALL-UPS, WILD CARD RACE

September 1, 2054
Long Beach, CA

The middle of August was looking great for the Surfers, sweeping an away series in Hawaii, and splitting 4 games at home against Sacramento, but the month ended in a tailspin with LBC losing consecutive series to non-contending FLH teams. The team flies to Louisville tonight to face the 83-54 Sluggers tomorrow evening.

We will see a new face in the third game of the series in KY, with 22-year-old Joe MacLeod getting the call up from AAA Commerce. The 2053 third round draftee skyrocketed through the minor league system last year, and started 18 games for the Yard Goats this season. An offseason training program at Driveline Baseball resulted in an extra couple of ticks on his fastball and improvement in his slider and changeup as well. He's going to give up more HR what we typically expect out of a Long Beach pitcher, but with scouts rating his stuff as a 12, he could be the best strikeout pitcher on the staff.

MacLeod's callup was necessary in part due to the regular-season-ending injury to Amayas Moelling. The 36 year old righty is dealing with bone chips in his elbow, and will be joining CF Arthur Daniel (torn groin) on the IL. Moelling made 9 starts for LBC (4.91 ERA, 0.6 WAR) following a July trade with SFB.

Recent callup Emilio Reyes is struggling at the plate in his first month of BBA action. His .231/.234/.308 line is good for an OPS+ of just 43, even lower than Daniel's mark of 45. Hopefully the position is not cursed, and the twenty-year-old Reyes will find his swing before too long, and help the Surfers compete for the final Wild Card spot.

BBA statisticians report that the Surfers have an 81.5% chance of capturing a Wild Card berth. With 26 games to play, they lead the Nashville Bluebirds (24 to play) by three games. They have no head to head matchups remaining, and both have road-heavy schedules to finish out the season. It's sure to be a tight race down to the final days.

I think this could go either way. Your recent injuries have created an opening for me, but I still gotta figure out how to win games this month. Good luck!

good luck to you too!

if Lucas Wood continues to suck, and MacLeod is garbage then there could be an opening for you.

Too bad the trade deadline passed. I'd still recommend you sending him down to the minors to make sure he doesnt' have an opportunity to continue sucking. Could really affect his career...

Sucks about the Moelling injury. Looks like he ate some innings before getting hurt.

Yeah he was pretty much what I wanted him to be for 9 starts. Oh well
