SURFERS GRAB COLLEGE PROSPECTS IN ROUND ONE, TWO

Gary Tinstaap

June 1, 2054
Long Beach, CA

The Surfers held the 6th and 43rd overall picks in the 2054 BBA Amateur draft. This years draft class was a bit of a step back from recent years, but certainly not devoid of talented players. Long Beach selected two college players

Round 1 / Pick 6
Image
CF/UTIL Emílio Reyes
B/T: R/R
Age: 20
Current: 7/8/5/4/8
Potential: 7/8/5/5/8
OFR : 10
OFE: 7
OFA: 7
CF: 8/10
SPD: 8
STL: 3
BR: 1

With the 6th overall pick in the first round, the Surfers picked twenty year old centerfielder Emílio Reyes, out of USAFA. Reyes hits right handed and doesn't display significant R/L splits. With his balanced, good but not great potential at the plate, he looks to primarily contribute through his defensive skills while not being a negative contributor at the plate. With his current level of development this appears to be a relatively safe pick for the Surfers, leaving higher risk/reward players on the board. He should progress rapidly through the minor league levels throughout the 2054 season, with the potential to contribute to the big league club down the stretch.

Should his offense prove to be not quite enough for an every day role, the Surfers would be wise to give him some more time in the minor leagues to polish his defense all over the diamond. He played 2B, 3B and SS in addition to CF during his college years. BBA scouts report that his athleticism will be enough for him to serve a utility role at every position besides C in the future.

OFP: 60 - 1st Division CF
Likely: 50 - 1st Division UTIL
BBA ETA: 2054

Round 2 / Pick 43

SP Juan Garza
B/T: R/R
Age: 20
Current: 6/8/8
Potential: 6/8/8
Fastball: 6/6
Slider: 7/7
Curveball: 7/7
Changeup: 2/2
Velocity: 92-94
Stamina: 6

With the 43rd overall pick in the second round, the Surfers picked second baseman Juan Garza, a 20 year old right handed starter out of Schlitz College. Garza relies primarily on a 3 pitch mix of FB, SL, CB and like many young starters he dabbles with a changeup that may or may not turn out to be useful in the BBA. For the Surfers, they'll look to get the 6', 180lb Garza into their strength and conditioning program with eyes on improving the velocity in order to bring his stuff up to the big league level as a starter. Barring success there, his stuff is anticipated to play up out of the bullpen, and could be a candidate for full time conversion to relief.

OFP: 50 - 2nd Division SP
Likely: 50 - 1st Division RP
BBA ETA: 2055
