SURFERS SELECT SS, TWO SP IN ROUND ONE

Gary Tinstaap

June 1, 2053
Long Beach, CA

The Surfers held the 7th, 16th, and 37th overall picks in the first round of the 2053 BBA Amateur draft. The draft pool has been a topic of debate, with some critical of a perceived lack of talent, and others arguing that it’s just the natural cycle of the game. Regardless, the Surfers got to select the right to sign three amateurs in the first round, let’s see who they chose.

Round 1 / Pick 7

UTIL Jim Vineyard
B/T: R/R
Age: 20
Current: 5/6/5/4/8
Potential: 6/7/5/4/8
IF Range: 9
IF Error: 8
IF Arm: 8
TDP: 9
SS Ovr: 7/9
SPD: 8
STL: 7
BR: 5

With the 7th overall pick in the first round, the Surfers picked twenty year old catcher Jim Vineyard, out of Bogota College. Vineyard hits right handed and shows a slight positive split towards left handed pitching. With his balanced, good but not great potential at the plate, he looks to primarily contribute through his defensive skills while not being a negative contributor at the plate. At shortstop, he should be about a league average defender with his 9 range. Scouts say that his defensive skills are very comparable to 2046 first rounder and current LB SS Steveland Morris. Look for him to get plenty of reps and second and third base to increase his utility to the team. He also has some competence in the outfield, and could lock up a super utility spot on a 27 man roster with the ability to play the outfield corners. Off the field he’s fairly quiet and level headed, well suited for the roller coaster of emotions that accompany professional baseball. With his current level of development, look for him to debut next year, with an outside shot of a cup of coffee this season.

OFP: 55 – 2nd Division SS
Likely: 50 – 1st Division UTIL
BBA ETA: 2054

Round 1 / Pick 16

SP John Cochrane
B/T: S/R
Age: 21
Current: 8/7/7
Potential: 8/7/7
Fastball: 7/7
Slider: 9/9
Changeup: 9/9
GB/FB: GB
Velocity: 90-92
Stamina: 7
Hold Runners: 4

With the 16th overall pick in the first round, the Surfers picked starting pitcher John Cochrane, a 21 year old right handed pitcher out of General Mills College. A first round selection of a pitcher is a return to the usual trend for the current Long Beach front office after a few years of more focus on batters. Cochrane is looking major league ready following three seasons of college ball, but there will be significant question about whether his current stuff will play in today’s BBA. He could be a candidate for a conversion to the bullpen, at least for the start of his career. As with Vineyard, Chochrane has a low-key personality and appears to be well suited for the professional ranks as far as intangibles go.

OFP: 55 – 2nd Division SP
Likely: 50 – 1st Division MR
BBA ETA: 2054

Round 1 / Pick 37
Image
RP Lowell Cook
B/T: L/R
Age: 19
Current: 9/4/5
Potential: 9/7/5
Fastball: 8/9
Curveball: 9/9
Slider: 3/3
Changeup: 9/9
GB/FB: Neutral
Velocity: 95-97
Stamina: 7
Hold Runners: 2

With the 37th overall pick in the first round, the Surfers picked pitcher Lowell Cook, a 19 year old right handed pitcher out of Nike College. A starter throughout high school and college, Cook was announced as a reliever upon his selection by the Surfers. The mediocre control and inability to hold runners are significant barriers for starting in the BBA and the Surfers will have no choice but to convert him to the bullpen without significant talent changes. The Long Beach coaching staff will focus on refining movement on Cook’s pitches, as his raw stuff appears to be major league ready. In the clubhouse he’s earned a reputation as a leader. He’s reported to be very happy about being drafted by the Surfers and should be one of their first signees.

OFP: 55 – 1st Division MR
Likely: 50 – 2nd Division MR
BBA ETA: 2055

Nice write up! You are definitely more aggressive about when players hit majors than I am.

I am really curious how this draft class performs especially if next year is stronger or similar.
