2052.01 - The Long Beach Independent - 2052 Amateur Draft Round 1
SURFERS FOCUS UP THE MIDDLE IN ROUND ONE

Long Beach, CA
The Surfers held the 6th and 16th overall picks in the 2052 BBA Amateur draft. The mid round pick is compensation for not signing their first overall pick last season. The draft pool has been hailed as the best in recent memory, with a trio of top of the line starting pitchers and solid contributors projected to fill out the rest of at least the first round.
Round 1 / Pick 6
C Rhys Atticus
B/T: R/R
Age: 16
Current: 3/6/3/4/3
Potential: 6/6/7/6/6
C Ability: 11
C Arm: 10
C Ovr: 6/12
SPD: 1
STL: 4
BR: 2
With the 6th overall pick in the first round, the Surfers picked sixteen year old catcher Rhys Atticus, out of Boeing High School. Atticus hits right handed and shows a slight positive split towards left handed pitching. With his balanced, good but not great potential at the plate, he looks to primarily contribute through his defensive skills while not being a negative contributor at the plate. Behind the dish, he’s one of the best HS catchers in recent memory, and coaches in the Long Beach organization have high praise. He could be the best defensive catcher ever employed by the current front office, and assuming he develops quickly, could be a great benefit to the young Surfer rotation. Furthermore, he grades out as a future leader, and should be a popular player with the fans, hailing from Stockton, CA.
OFP: 65 - 1st Division C
Likely: 55 - 2nd Division C
BBA ETA: 2055
Round 1 / Pick 16
2B Miller Shed
B/T: L/R
Age: 17
Current: 3/7/3/7/3
Potential: 9/7/3/7/8
IF Range: 7
IF Error: 7
IF Arm: 4
TDP: 8
SPD: 7
STL: 4
BR: 5
With the 16th overall pick in the first round, the Surfers picked second baseman Miller Shed, a 17 year old left handed hitter out of Vanguard High School. This pick continues the Surfers departure from their usual approach of picking pitchers at the top of the draft. The last time they did this it was for Steveland Morris and Ski Mellilo, one of which is working out rather well for the team. Back to Shed though, scouts rave about his contract ability and he shows great promise with his eye as well. Scouts worry that he could have trouble facing LHP at the professional level, though there’s been no such split in his high school career. Defensively he should grade out as an average performer at the keystone and hopefully make up for any deficiencies with his bat. He won’t be stealing bases like Morris, but he has the potential to be trouble for opposing defenses with his spray hitting tendencies.
OFP: 60 - 1st Division 2B
Likely: 50 - 2nd Division 2B
BBA ETA: 2055

Thanks. Surely I'll regret Atticus if Lololo becomes a top starter but he had too many red flags. Had a good feeling about Atticus so went for it.

I think Shed is a trap. He'll be a liability in the field unless he bumps range and then should you move him to 1B or DH (the only other 2 spots he could land) his bat suddenly doesn't look as good because of his lack of power. LOVE Atticus though.

I think you're right. I'm just gonna tell myself that 2B defense is unnecessary tho...haha

Re: 2052.01 - The Long Beach Independent - 2052 Amateur Draft Round 1
Obviously, I'm partial to my ammy creation, Rhys Atticus, who will be a framing runs god, so long as framing runs remain a thing. A bit chagrined to see him down the road in Long Beach.
Shed should be fine, I think, but my reservations about him come down to mostly personal preference, prioritizing defense at that position. You gotta love those on-base tool projections, though.

Came very close to drafting Shed but went for Martinez instead. Both would have been nice!

more is always better!
Martinez has Shed beat on defense, but I don't like that contact profile. hard to say which way is better to go, just personal preference.
