RUTGERS, SHORT SHOW PROMISE
Surfers Season In Review Series, #3 of However Many I Feel Like Writing
Sophomore Sam Rutgers was given a full season's workload for 2050 and, while he didn't quite live up to his promise as a 10th overall draft pick, he held his own and shows some promise for the future. His 7.7 K/9 was better than Danya Tchekanov's mark this season, and his 2.6 BB/9 were higher than we might expect for a pitcher with 8 rated control.
Over 182.1 innings in 32 starts, Rutgers had an ERA of 4.20, WHIP of 1.27 and struck out 157 batters. Next year will be Rutgers' age-25 season, so the Surfers will likely be expecting a big step forward into top of the rotation performance.
Another recent top-10 draft pick made his debut this season in the Surfers rotation, though with less success. Twenty-two year old Barry Short made 14 starts this year with the big club. It was a mixed bag, as he ended up with a 5.88 ERA but had a number of solid starts. His best start was on May 25, where he pitched 7.1 innings of one-run ball against the San Fernando Bears, allowing just 5 hits and striking out 8.
The Surfers have pinned much of their hope for future success on their recent top draft picks, which have almost exclusively been starting pitchers. They'll hope for steps forward from Rutgers and Short, and cross their fingers for success from 2048 first rounder, Yoshimatsu Miyauchi.
