MORRIS LEADS SURFERS IN BATTER WAR

Surfers Season In Review Series, #1 of However Many I Feel Like Writing

No one expected the Surfers to lead the Frick League in runs this year. But I don't think the average estimate would have been 14th either. It's certainly not what the front office expected. Some big names like Gonzalo Martinez and Todd Rice posted career-worst seasons. Late bloomer Juan Hernandez posted 0.7 WAR after two years of 3.5 & 3.7 performances. Hsin Mei's career appears to have finally kicked the bucket, and Kwan-uk Chong's may never get off the ground floor.

However, we're here to talk about a the only bright spot in the lineup this year. Shortstop/Second Baseman Steveland Morris. The 23 year old switch hitter posted 3.5 WAR in 131 starts, splitting time between SS and 2B. He lead the team in batting average (.285) and stolen bases (82), setting a modern era team record for the latter.

He played in 49 games last year, posting a .221/.282/.258 line, a disappointment, but understandable for a young player with a skill set as unique as his. This year, he improved to .285/.355/.367, with 5 home runs, and he stole those 82 bases with a nice 69% success rate. The batting line was good for a 98 OPS+, which the front office must be very pleased with. The slap hitting speedy profile is a change of pace from the normally slugger-centric Surfer lineup.

Morris was also selected to the 2050 All Star Game.
