2049.01 - The Long Beach Independent - Simpson Returns

SIMPSON RETURNS FOR ONE (OR TWO) MORE

January 1, 2049
Long Beach, CA

The first significant move of the 48-49 offseason for the Long Beach Surfers took until January 1 to materialize, but it was the happiest of New Year's gifts for the front office. Surfer legend and future Hall of Famer Mark Simpson notified the team that he had agreed to their offer of 1 year, $7.25 million with a player option for a second year at the same rate.

It's not often that we see 40 year old players command salaries of this size, but after two years in Mexico posting 3.8 and 3.4 WAR, and leading the league in walks in 2047, Simpson has certainly earned it. In recent years, some teams (Surfers included) have utilized Simpson primarily against left handed pitching. However, over the past two seasons with the Aztecs, he has proven that he's still capable of hitting right handers. With the ineptitude of Stephen Shelton at the plate last season, look for Simpson to get a long leash against RHP to start the season.

The 7-time All Star first appeared in the BBA in 2030, as the Surfers looked to repeat as BBA Champions. Despite 7 playoff appearances in his first 9 seasons with the club, they were never able to break through and win one with Simpson on the roster. It would be a stretch for this publication to call the team a contender in 2049, but there is a solid core of pitching on the roster, and that's always a good start.

Looks like he made the right choice, though risky at his age, to opt out in Mexico City. He got a pay raise.

Simpson is going to get 31 out of 32 Hall of Fame votes. (Unanimous non-Phoenix category.)

Fun fact about Simpson, BTW: with a normal season for him, he'll move into the #2 all-time spot in walks. Right now he's #5.

BTW, #6 is still active. Big respect if you know who it is.

Probably not. Closest he got to Charlotte was time in Chicago, dont think we could swing that one.
