2048.01 - The Long Beach Independent - An Early Look at the Surfers' Offseason

Signings, Releases, Extension Rumors

December 16, 2047
Long Beach, CA

The Surfers' offseason started off with a significant yet unsurprising transaction, as the team option for 1B Manuel Aguilar Jr. was declined. The team will pay him a $6.6 million buyout in lieu of an $11 million contract to play first base. Now 31 years old, the lefty never lived up to his performance from earlier in his career. He ends his time in Long Beach with a 100 OPS+ and just 5.2 WAR generated over four seasons. Jose Lopez, 30, would appear to be in line for starts at first base, barring a free agent signing.

Also released was left fielder Ricardo Torres, the 2045 All-Star who failed to repeat the success of his rookie season. The Long Beach outfield is full, and growing, with the addition of old friend Luis 'Love Machine' Costello. The 34-year-old righty is well regarded in the clubhouse and has a demonstrated ability to be an excellent hitter against left handed pitching. He played for the Surfers in 2045, coincidentally the only year since 2042 that he has posted less than 1 WAR. The front office is hoping that his second stint is more successful. Sources inside the front office indicate that the deal is essentially a one year deal for $3 million, with vesting options for years two and three.

The club also added to their bullpen depth, signing southpaw Angel Hernandez to a four year deal. The 28-year-old will be paid $5 million for each season through 2051. Over nine seasons in Yellow Springs, Hernandez pitched 531 innings with 772 strikeouts and a 2.19 ERA. Along with fellow lefty Luis Manuel Rodriguez the Surfer bullpen could again be a mighty force in the late innings.

That's a hefty buyout.

yeah...I think I do the big buyouts in an effort to keep the AAV down, but I have no idea how impactful it is.

Glad to see the Surfers will still be the same old Surfers.

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
