Surfers Finish Season 27-27
The Surfers played .500 baseball over the final two months of the season, a far better result than the sub-.400 pace for the first 4 months of the year. Though it will hurt their draft position in the coming years, it brings hope that a return to the playoffs is closer than expected.
Dickinson, Dominguez Impress
Lefty Chet Dickinson was impressive in seven starts with the Surfers, posting a 2.66 ERA and 4.29 FIP. The 30 year old career minor leaguer could see more time in Long Beach next year, either at the back of the rotation or in the bullpen.
Twenty-four-year-old righty Manuel Dominguez was also impressive, with a microscopic 0.67 ERA in 13.1 innings (two starts). His changeup is still not ready for the bigs, but don't be surprised if you see his high-90s fastball and devastating curveball in the Surfers bullpen early next year.
Overlooked Prospect?
Rizal Sabinay was a second round pick in the 2047 amateur draft. Somehow he was overlooked in our previous report about the state of the franchise's pitching, but we would like to highlight him here. The 21 year old from the Philippines projects to be a solid mid-rotation contributor. Scouts rate him with potentials of 8/7/8 and with actuals of 7/7/8 he could be another fast riser through the minor league system.
