The BBA's 2046 Amateur draft has come to a close and we're back to get you all you need to know about the young ballplayers that could soon be the newest members of the Long Beach Surfers organization. Rounds 2 through 5 brought more balance as the team selected two pitchers and two position players, all out of high school.

Round 2 / Pick 62
Image
2B Carlito 'Charlie' Brigante
B/T: R/L
Current: 4/6/2/4/4
Potential: 8/6/2/5/9
OF Range: 10
OF Error: 7
OF Arm: 6
SPD: 11
STL: 12

With the 62nd overall pick, the Surfers picked outfielder Charlie Brigante out of high school. Brigante is the rare throw-lefty-bat-righty, player and should provide good defense in an outfield corner, with the ability to play center field in a pinch. As with the Surfers' previous two picks, Brigante has excellent bat to ball skills but completely lacks power. Like first rounder Steveland Morris, he could also be one of the BBA's best base stealers. Fairly well developed for his age, look for Charlie to spend a few seasons in the minor leagues before making an impact in Long Beach.

OFP: 55 - 1st Division RF
Likely: 40 - 1st Division 4th OF
BBA ETA: 2049

Round/Overall: 3 / 105
LH RP David Encarnación
Current: 7/5/4
Potential: 9/7/5
Fastball: 7/7
Curveball: 8/9
Changeup: 1/1
Velocity: 89-91

With the 105th overall pick, the Surfers selected relief pitcher David Encarnación. The lefty thrower is 5'11'' and relies primarily on his excellent curveball to get hitters out. Scouts have noted steady improvement in his future potential since his freshman season, and accordingly he moved up draft boards to become a third round pick. His velocity could use some work, as he currently sits right around 90 MPH. It's not terrible for a lefty, but any improvement would have a significant impact on his strikeout ability. As his potential is today, he'll probably peak as a low leverage middle reliever, with a chance to be a high leverage reliever with velocity improvement.

OFP: 55 - High-Leverage Reliever
Likely: 40 - Low-Leverage Reliever
BBA ETA: 2048

Round 4 / Pick 138
Image
LH RP Stephen Hogan
Current: 2/4/1
Potential: 7/7/6
Sinker: 3/7
Splitter: 3/7
Changeup: 1/1
Velocity: 89-91

The Surfers doubled up on lefty relievers here in the fourth round, selecting another soft-tosser in Stephen Hogan. An extreme ground ball pitcher, Hogan throws his sinker in the upper 80s and his splitter a few ticks below that. He definitely fits the mold of a Long Beach reliever that will get a lot of ground balls. Like Encarnación, he's seen steady improvement in his potentials throughout high school, so the Surfers are definitely hoping that the trend continues as he joins the professional ranks.

OFP: 40 - Low-Leverage Reliever
Likely: 30 - AAAA Reliever
BBA ETA: 2050

Round 5 / Pick 170
Image
C Justin Schmidt
B/T: R/R
Current: 6/9/2/4/9
Potential: 6/9/2/4/9
C Arm: 6
C Ability: 6

In the 5th round, the Surfers grabbed a young HS catcher, Justin Schmidt. At just 17, he's the youngest player selected so far, and surprisingly also considered the most well developed. The OOTP scouts peg just a 20 grade on this young man, but in my eyes he looks to be more like a 40 grade prospect. He possesses excellent gap power and is great at avoiding the strikeout. He doesn't project to be an excellent defensive catcher, but should be good enough for an every day role behind the plate. Look for him to rise quickly through the minor league system and compete for a backup job as early as 2047.

OFP: 50 - 2nd Division Starting Catcher
Likely: 40 - 1st Division Backup Catcher
BBA ETA: 2047
