OLD FRIEND RETURNS TO LBC
August 17, 2045
Long Beach, CA
A future Hall of Fame first baseman arrived at LGB this morning, ready to rejoin the team that he spent the first 10 seasons of his 16 year career. Mark Simpson, 7 time All Star and on-base machine, is expected to be in uniform for tonight's game against the Vancouver Mounties.
Now 36 years old, he's no longer the 6-8 win player that broke into the BBA in 2030, but his most important skill remains intact. His batting eye still rates as one of the best in the league and he's maintained solid OBPs to date. With Manuel Aguilar, Jr. occupying the every day 1B spot, Simpson will likely be slated for starts against left handed pitchers in addition to pinch-hitting duties.
This season in Omaha, Simpson has hit .256/.475/.547 against southpaws, good for 1.4 WAR in just 37 starts. The Surfers would be thrilled if he could play anywhere close to that in Long Beach, especially considering the teams struggles against left handed starters.
The Surfers are currently 14 games above .500 and just 1/2 game back of division leading Hawaii, but against lefties, they are 18-23. Right-handed outfielder Luis Costello is slated to return next week from the Injured List. He's been hitting .273/.305/.587 this year against left-handed pitching. With Costello and Simpson in the lineup, an improved record against lefty starters could mean the difference between making and missing the playoffs as the league approaches the final stretch.

Arthur Dempster is also 36. Two Hall of Famers I think.

Costello has been a bit under rated, too. Just saying.
