SURFERS PICK PLAYERS IN 'SHALLOW' DRAFT

Gary Tinstaap

April 22, 2043
Long Beach, CA

Gary Tinstaap here, yet again. Some draft years are better than others, and let's just say that 2043 is no 2038. Shall we get on with it?

Round/Overall: 1/6
RH SP Frank Walbourne
Current:3/5/3
Potential: 6/8/5
Curveball: 6/8
Changeup: 4/8
Sinker: 6/8
Velocity: 90-92

Frank Walbourne is a Canadian righty who looks like a typical Sufers pitching pick. Excellent movement on 3 pitches, none of which are a traditional fastball. His sinker sits in the low 90s and along with a developing changeup, contributes to what should be an excellent groundball profile. He'll turn 19 later this summer, and looks to be right around where he should be on the development curve. At 6' 160lbs, it's hard to put a lot more projection on his velocity, so his success will be dependent on his offspeed pitches filling out. He showed steady statistical improvement each year in high school, and his potentials have held steady along the way.

OFP: 65 - Mid-Rotation SP
Likely: 50 - Back-End SP/Long Reliever
BBA ETA: 2046

Round/Overall: 2/42
OF Al Garrett
Bats/Throws: Right/Right
Current: 2/6/4/3/3
Potential: 5/6/6/5/5
OF Range: 8
OF Error: 8
OF Arm: 8

In the second round, the Surfers drafted another 18 year old out of high school, right handed outfielder Al Garrett. As you can see, we're only at pick 42 and this draft is really starting to thin out. Garrett is known as a highly adaptable player with a good work ethic, and that's probably the best things he's got going for him. He projects to have average skills at the plate across the board, and unless he makes improvements in the outfield, his likely destination is right field. He should have the glove to play there, but his bat will leave much to be desired. That said, he's only 18 and there's plenty of time for him to surprise us.

OFP: 45 - 4th OF
Likely: 35 - 5th/6th OF
BBA ETA: 2045

Round/Overall: 3/84
OF Mario Rodriguez
Bats/Throws: Left/Left
Current: 5/5/3/5/7
Potential: 5/5/3/5/7
OF Range: 3
OF Error: 8
OF Arm: 7

With their pick of Mario Rodriguez, the Surfers switch it up and draft a fully developed college player. He was previously drafted by the Valencia Stars in 2042. He might be able to hit a bit against righties. He might be able to play a bit of left field. He might put on a Surfers uniform one day, but probably not.

OFP: 30 - AAA Depth
Likely: 20 - Free Agent Fodder
BBA ETA: lol

Round/Overall: 4/120
2B Carlos Ocanto
Bats/Throws: Right/Right
Current: 3/5/1/3/4
Potential: 4/5/1/3/7
IF Range: 6
IF Error: 6
IF Arm: 2
TDP: 8

Ocanto plays second base. He's not that good at it. He hits right handed. He's not really good at that either. He's 22 years old, so, not much to dream on there either. Yellow Springs drafted him last year, but didn't sign him. Not sure what we can learn from that.

OFP: 30 - AAA Depth
Likely: 20 - Free Agent Fodder
BBA ETA: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Round/Overall: 5/152
RH SP Jorge Roman
Current:5/4/3
Potential: 6/5/4
Fastball: 8/9
Changeup: 7/7
Velocity: 95-97

If you squint, you might see something here. He's got two pitches, which we know the Surfers like for SP conversion potential. And he throws mid-high 90s, which is also good for that. His movement and control could use some work, but he's not too old yet, so there's at least a chance. We'll keep an eye on him.

OFP: 50 - Middle Innings RP
Likely: 40 - Low Leverage RP
BBA ETA: 2045
