COMPTON OUT, SKITTLE TO 'PEN

Alfaro Returns, Delgado and Hernandez to Debut

July 7, 2042
Seattle, WA

Just one week after a struggling Mike Manning and his -1.3 WAR were designated for assignment, infielder Brett Compton and his -1.2 WAR received the same call. Compton, still just 30 years old, parlayed good seasons in Vancouver and Mexico City into a 6 year, $36 million dollar deal with Long Beach. In total, with the negative value performance this season, Compton was worth 2.3 WAR to the Surfers. Yes, that's total wins, for his age 26-30 seasons, after he averaged 2.7 wins per season in Mexico City. We're not bitter, but we imagine the man signing Compton's checks, especially for next year's $6 million, might be.

Speaking of underwhelming performances, longtime Surfer, and fan and front office favorite Jimmy Greenwood will be spending some time in the bullpen. He's struggled to the tune of a 6.75 ERA (5.94 FIP) this season, and has seen his curveball regress from mediocre to unusable. Rumor has it that management has discussed this move with him, and that there are plans for him to spend the offseason at a special training facility to further this move. At 36, he is unlikely to void his option for an $18 million dollar salary next year, and this appears to be an effort by player and team to avoid a more difficult decision.

In more exciting news, top prospect Ernesto Delgado has apparently left Commerce and is heading up to Seattle for this final series before the All-Star break. It's been no secret that he's been unhappy this season in AAA, and we have also heard rumors of the commissioners office pressuring Long Beach management to promote him, among others. Delgado's path towards his first BBA start has been well documented in this publication appears nearly fully developed to most scouts that have seen him lately. Hopefully this midseason call up for a team with no shot at the playoffs is a good situation for the youngster. It's no secret that a significant portion of the Surfers' future rests on his right arm.

Finally, we come to the promotion of second baseman Manuel Hernandez. The 6'1'' left handed batter was a 6th round draftee of the Surfers in 2037. He can't hit lefties, but against righties he should do just fine (6/7/4/6/6) and should also hold his own at the keystone. His arm is weak, but his footwork is solid, and his range is adequate. He just turned 22, and has been destroying AAA pitching since his age 19 season. If it weren't for the aforementioned Compton, it's likely we would have seen Hernandez at least a year ago.

To be sure, these moves alone will not revitalize the Surfers. The season is lost, they'll be lucky if they avoid 100 losses. However there's still a few more prospects left in the system, and they could have a nice yacht's worth of payroll cap space as soon as next year.

I've come to understand that Ernesto Delgado wants to follow Danya to Yellow Springs.

Some difficult moves, but good ones, from the looks of things. Compron’s kind of a shame - those defensive skills are eye popping, but it’s gotta translate in the games.

Good luck with it all - will be interesting to see how these play out!

Thanks! Compton was really disappointing overall... I'm wondering if there's some problem in the way I'm evaluating guys, cause I thought he was a pretty good bet to be better.

The negative zone rating at shortstop for Compton is a head-scratcher. You would hope he’d be able to at least hold his own there (and kick butt at 2B, of course). As for the hitting, I’m finding that “5” contact guys seem to hover around .200 and, unless they can make up for it with walks or power, turn into black holes in the lineup: I’m looking at you Jim Lorenzen, Keith Sanchez and the rest of the good glove/no hit legions I’ve tried in CF the last 3 years...
