PAIR OF TRADES SIGNAL START OF SELLOFF

June 23, 2042
Long Beach, CA

The Surfers announced a pair of trades today before their 11-0 loss against the Vancouver Mounties. The loss was their 8th of more than 10 runs on the season, as tracked by BBA Feature writer Chris Wilson in a regular article titled "F.U.B.A.Rs of the Sim." The Surfer's 0-8 record leads the league in futility.

In a move that may or may not help that effort, Long Beach shipped left handed starter Luis Oliva to the Brooklyn Robins. At 29, Oliva was in his final contract year and had indicated to Surfers management that he wished to explore free agency at the end of the year. Acquired in 2033 from the Atlantic City Gamblers, Oliva was a consistent mid-rotation starter since his debut in 2036. He was rarely injured and was even named the Frick League Pitcher of the Month for his efforts in June 2038.

In return for Oliva, the Surfers acquired minor league reliever Jose Cardenas from the Robins. Cardenas, 22, has just over one month of BBA service time and is the type of reliever that we've become accustomed to seeing in a Long Beach uniform. Described by rival GMs as a "weird" "one-trick pony" more "rare than a unicorn" you just know that GM Lane couldn't resist the temptation.

He essentially throws one pitch, a sinker, but what that sinker does against righties makes rivals want to "puke in a UPS box" and usually results in a groundout to the shortstop. He's got a "show-me" changeup that really should never be shown, but his real value may be his excellent stamina. In fact, Brooklyn GM Alan Ehlers has recently stated that "stamina in RP is one of the most undervalued attributes in the BBA right now." So, we're not saying that Long Beach wins this trade by a mile, but we're not not saying that.

In the other, minor move, Long Beach shipped away minor league reliever Jerry Chesney to Yellow Springs in exchange for one-time promising OF Andy McKinney who has been rotting away in AAA for some time now.

McKinney will provide some OF depth for the Surfers during their rebuild, and may signal the end of the road for Mike Manning, who has struggled mightily this year, providing negative 1.3 WAR for the team.

I stand by my “puke in a UPS box” comment

Life is a bit more beautiful when time is measured by the half inning rather than the half hour.
