2041.06 - Where Are They Now? - Pepe Castillo

Post by Lane » Wed Mar 04, 2020 7:16 pm

Welcome back to another edition of Where Are They Now, from the baseball staff at the Long Beach Independent. Today we're taking a look at a former Surfers pitcher you may have forgotten about.

Believe it or not, it was only 4 seasons ago that Pepe Castillo wore the Surfers uniform. That was 2037, after spending 17 years in the organization. He was unceremoniously placed on waivers after posting a 7.04 ERA in 20 games to start the season. He had a successful season in Huntsville to close out the ’37 season and bounced around the BBA with varying success until the 2040 season.

He’s on our minds today because he just completed a successful season in the UMEBA, with the Mumbai Metro Stars. In his age 36 season, he made 35 starts, pitching 174 innings with a 5.12 ERA (96 ERA+). While not quite a superstar, this was good for 3.4 WAR, not bad for a 36 year old making his debut in a league on the other side of the world.

His name appears on ballots for Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year, for which he may receive some down ballot support. With his control remaining intact as he ages, we wouldn’t be surprised if he repeats this performance next year in the final year of his current contract with Mumbai. He’ll be 38 for the start of the 2043 season, so it’s up in the air whether he continues to pitch, but we know that a durable pitcher with good control will always be valuable somewhere.

Before we wrap up, let’s remember his first six seasons in Long Beach. He was a latecomer to the BBA, making his debut in 2031 at age 26. He was fantastic, with a 2.54 ERA (3.22 FIP) in 12 starts. This was to be his best ERA in the BBA, but he was as good of a mid to back of the rotation arm as any team could ask for. From 2032-2036 he averaged nearly 3 WAR/season, with an ERA under 4, and he never made fewer than 31 starts in that span.

The Independent wishes Mr. Castillo the best in his time in the UMEBA and hopes to see him back in the Long Beach organization as a coach someday.
