RIOS OPTION LOOMS LARGE
For real, that thing is huge.
October 10, 2040
Long Beach, CA
For the astute observer, 2040 always seemed like the end of the road for the current iteration of the Long Beach Surfers. Or at least the beginning of the end. Back in 2037, mega-contracts were given out to Jimmy Greenwood and Cris Rios. The contracts were set up to get more expensive down the road, and down the road has arrived. Greenwood is now 34, with 3/$48 million remaining. Rios is with 3/$48 of his own remaining.
However, Rios negotiated an opt-out following the 2040 season. Long Beach management obliged, and we suspect that they may be crossing their fingers for him to execute the option. As it stands, the Surfers appear to have a starting payroll of $93 million next year, against a $110 million cap. A Rios opt out would give them a payroll of $77 million, leaving a tidy $33 million for free agency additions and extensions.
All other significant pieces of the roster will be returning to the team, either through arbitration or under current contracts with the exception of Feliciano Rafael. Sources within the organization indicate that while attempts have been made to extend the Nebraska-winning righty, the price has remained too high. At worst, his 4.3 WAR (however disappointing it may have been) will net the Surfers a compensation pick between the first and second rounds in 2041.
