2040.02 - The Long Beach Independent - Surfers Ownership Purchases AAA Affiliate, Announces Relocation

'YOUNG GUNS' TO BE COME 'YARD GOATS'

January 1, 2040
Commerce, CA

O'Shea "OMG" Jackson, Jr., Surfers owner, issued a press release today announcing the purchase and relocation of the franchise's AAA affiliate. The ballclub is currently located in Santa Fe, NM and known as the "Young Guns." The team will relocate to the City of Commerce and be nicknamed the Yard Goats. The purchase allows the organization more control over the club, and the relocation is certain to increase revenues and flexibility of moving players between AAA and BBA.

The organization first affiliated with the franchise in Santa Fe following the ill-fated move of the BBA club to Tucson, AZ. With the club back in Long Beach for over a decade now, it was certainly time to get the affiliate closer geographically to the big league team.

A number of cities were rumored to be considered in addition to the City of Commerce, including Orange, Santa Ana and Bell Gardens. With a vibrant economy and a direct freeway connection to Long Beach, Commerce turned out to be an obvious choice. Already a significant entertainment hub, with The Citadel outdoor mall and outlet center and the Commerce Casino, both adjacent to the 5 Freeway, the addition of the new ballpark provides another reason for nearby residents to travel to the city.

The nickname Yard Goats was a natural fit once the City of Commerce was chosen. A yard goat is slang referring to a switcher, used in rail yards to assemble and disassemble trains. The city is home to one of southern California's largest rail yards, and serves as an important hub for the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles, the two busiest container ports in the nation.

Fans coming to The Citadel will be excited to see one of Long Beach's top prospects, Gonzalo Martinez, a 19 year old right handed masher who is expected to be a contributor to the big club by the end of the 2040 season.

And here I always thought a Yard Goat was what you bought when you didn't want to mow the lawn.
