GOMEZ, CHAVARRIA EARN THEIR KEEP

September 30, 2039
Long Beach, CA

As we look back on a disappointing season from the Surfers, we'd like to highlight a couple of bright young players that provided unexpected contributions this season.

The Surfers carried not just one, but two Rule 5 draft picks onto their opening day roster this year. An already crowded infield saw the addition of right handed hitting DH/1B Enrique Gomez. The 25 year old came from Atlantic City and had his best season since his debut in 2034. His .263/.350/.503 line won't exactly win him any awards, but it was good enough to keep him on the roster, and provides some security and flexibility to the team with Mark Simpson's status for next year up in the air. Gomez had a .910 OPS against left handed pitching, and will likely compete for at least a bench spot for the 2040 season.

The second Rule 5 player is reliever Raul Chavarria. A right handed reliever with a devastating cutter and changeup, he is effective against lefties as well as righties. He keeps the ball in the yard, though he does tend to surrender too many walks at times. He missed significant time this year due to injury, but in just 12 innings he showed that he is worth a long look for 2040, posting an ERA of 0.75 while striking out 16 batters. Also 25, he could be a significant contributor to next year's bullpen assuming he is able to stay healthy.

Simpson asking more than you want? Thinking it's time to move on? Hard to imagine him not in LB.

It's really weird. And CarGo to. These are the guys I built my team around when I first came into the league, and we had some pretty good teams. Gonna have to accept that they won't be around forever at some point.
