GM NOWHERE TO BE FOUND ON EVE OF OPENING DAY
March 31, 2039
Long Beach, CA
As a suspiciously quite offseason comes to a close, rumors are swirling around Long Beach this morning as anonymous team sources reveal that GM Stephen Lane has yet to make an appearance in his stadium office.
Assistant General Manager Carlos Reyes had "no comment" regarding his boss' absence, and added that it's "business as usual here" in the lead-up to Opening Day 2039. Normally Lane is a very hands-on GM, speaking with the press regularly, and rarely going more than a day without at least making an appearance at his stadium office.
After barely squeaking into a playoff spot in 2038, fans had high hopes of significant changes over the offseason. However, there were very few changes in the roster since the end of the '38 season and apparently the front office thought it appropriate to stand pat for the most part.
Perhaps the most significant addition was Rule 5 pick, first baseman Enrique Gomez from the Atlantic City Gamblers. Gomez, a righty, has seen the bigs in ATC every year since 2034, though he's never had more than 150 ABs in a single season. He would appear to be poised for the weak side of a DH platoon, and able to fill in occasionally for Mark Simpson on the field.
