GREENWOOD AND RIOS CHOOSE LBC
December 1, 2037
Long Beach, CA
You’ll want to be sitting down for this news, folks. The Long Beach Surfers announced the signing of two of the biggest free agent pitchers on the market this offseason. Old friend Jimmy Greenwood, the BBA’s premier control pitcher returns to the club on a 6 year $80 million deal. New friend, righty flamethrower Cris Rios agreed on a 6 year $84 million deal that includes a player opt-out after year three.
Let’s talk Greenwood first. He’s 32 now, but hasn’t lost a bit of the control that first made him famous across the BBA. In fact, he’s led the league in BB/9 since 2030, his first full season. Last season he walked just 14 players in 33 starts (230 innings) en route to a 3.32 ERA (3.35 FIP) and 6.7 WAR. He’s still not completely figured out the changeup, but it is a bit better than it was when he was traded away prior to the 2035 season.
“We’re thrilled to have Jimmy back with us. It was purely a business decision to trade him away a few years back. We simply couldn’t afford to pay him the money that he deserved. When we reached out to him this offseason, he let us know that he would be happy to re-join the team” said GM Stephen Lane at the re-introductory press conference.
Cris Rios, 29, is another right hander. In many ways the opposite of Greenwood, his fastball sits high 90s and he’s been known to hit 101 from time to time. He walks a lot more batters (3.4/9 last season) but is equally effective against lefties and righties thanks to an excellent cutter and forkball. He has a career ERA of 3.74 and FIP of 4.03 and does a good job of inducing ground balls.
“Cris is a great pitcher, we love what he brings to our pitching staff. And the word around the league is that he’s a hard worker. He’ll fit right in to the culture we’ve built in Long Beach” said Lane.
Greenwood, Rios and the rest of the pitching staff will be thrilled to learn that they will be backed up by an excellent defensive infield headlined by the new double play partners Dong-soo Chon and Brett Compton, also acquired this month.
