2037.02 - The Long Beach Independent - Front Office Picks Another R5 Reliever

MARIO GONZALEZ ACQUIRED FROM VANCOUVER

January 1, 2037
Long Beach, CA

The BBA's annual Rule 5 draft concluded today. GMs all over the league scoured the list of eligible players, searching for a diamond in the rough, hidden among hundreds of minor league castoffs.

As with last years selection of Hector Gallegos (8/6/5 Ratings), Gonzalez is a well developed young reliever. Gonzalez looks to be even better than Gallegos, with his ratings of 11/8/5 vs RHB and 9/6/4 vs LHB. He's currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, but given his age, the Surfers are confident in a full recovery.

He's a pure sinkerballer, relying mainly on that pitch with just a "show-me" changeup to keep batters honest. Though he's never pitched above A-ball, the scouts all agree that he looks to be BBA ready. Given his injury, he'll be able to spend time on the DL and then up to one month in the minor leagues, where the Surfers will be able to get him some experience at the higher levels before going to the BBA.

Long term, he could end up as a middle reliever, or high leverage ROOGY. We know Long Beach is a fan of Big Bullpen(tm) and he looks to fit the mold perfectly.

Back to last years selection of Hector Gallegos (8/6/5 Ratings), he ended the season with a 3.67 ERA over 27 innings pitched, mostly to RHB against which he is rated 9/7/5. It's looking like a great pick for the Surfers, as it's not always easy for a competitive team to find a way to keep a Rule 5 pick for an entire season. The strategy of picking up bullpen arms seems to be a solid one for this team.
