McQUADE LEADS SURFERS TO DOUBLEDAY VICTORY

The Lone Wolf had a down 2036 season, but caught fire in the Doubleday series, facing the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2028 amateur draft. On paper, the series looked like an easy one for the Nine. Rolling over the Surfers in the regular season series, a run differential over 160 better than Long Beach. Polling before the series indicated little to no indication that anyone though the Surfers had a chance.

Game one went as predicted, with Lawrence Columbus LaLoosh leading the Nine to a victory. Game two was a different story, and it didn't take long for the Surfers to give their fans some hope. It was the top of the third inning against Jose Chavez, when defensive specialist Jesus Delgado slapped a single through the 6-hole, and superstar Mark Simpson followed it up with a home run down the right field line. Chavez walked a tightrope with a walk, a strikeout, a single and another strikeout before old friend J.J. McQuade stepped to the plate. Out for blood at Utopia Field, a night after going 0-3, McQuade took a big hack and missed on the first pitch. He stepped out, adjusted his batting gloves, and refocused on the left handed Chavez. He wasn't fooled this time, as he made contact and blasted the ball 371 feet over the left field wall. The crowd fell silent as McQuade rounded the bases to meet his teammates gathered around the plate.

The next batter, Mike Manning took the first pitch for a strike, but the next pitch hit him square in the back. He charged the mound, and the benches cleared immediately. Following the ruckus, both Manning and Chavez were ejected, leaving the Nine bullpen with a lot of work to do. It was a back and forth game from then on, that ended up going 10 innings. Long Beach's bullpen was taxed as well, but was perhaps more prepared for additional innings.

The Surfers carried 9 relievers to Yellow Springs' 7 and this could have been the difference in the series. In the deciding game six, the Surfers broke the game open in the top of the 9th, scoring 5 runs off of the Nine 'pen. It was reminiscent of the game five win in Seattle just a week and a half ago.

The Surfers are now on to the Cartwright Cup against the San Fernando Bears. They'll be underdogs again, and of course they won't have home field advantage (again). They're four wins away from the franchise's second Landis Memorial appearance. Can the smoke and mirrors keep up the late-inning magic on the road? Or will the Bears shut down their division rivals and head to the Landis for the second time in three years?
