2036.11 - The Long Beach Independent - Surfers FO Gears Up for Big Draft

COMP PICKS ABOUND FOR LBC

April 8, 2036
Long Beach, CA

The 2036 BBA Amateur Draft opens today, and it looks to be a big one for your Long Beach Surfers. Thanks to an unsigned 2035 first rounder and three free agent compensation picks, the Surfers will choose six players in the first 85 picks.

The team struggled through an up and down 2035 season, ending with just 85 wins and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2028. The upshot to this is that their first pick in the draft moved up to 21st from 24th last season. Because they were not able to come to terms with last year's first rounder Frank Underwood, they will then have the 29th overall pick.

As compensation for losing one Type A free agent, and two Type B free agents, the Surfers will have one additional pick following the first round and two additional picks following the second round.

The amateur draft has been a bit of a weak spot for the franchise over the past decade under the current regime. The best homegrown player remains Carlos Gonzales (.320/.333/.580, 3 HR, 12 RBI), who was drafted by the previous front office. This could be changing though, as 2B Sloan Daniel (.273/.333/.341, 0 HR, 2 RBI), a 2034 draftee is off to a promising start after his surprise Opening Day debut.

Stay tuned to The Independent as Gary Tinstaap will be along next week to tell you exactly how well the Surfers did in this year's draft.

Really wishing I hadn't signed my R1 last year and had 2 first rounders this year. Even more so now that my R1 last year has already hit the tank button
