With their #2 pick in the 2009 Ammy Draft (51st overall), the Las Vegas Hustlers selected 22 year old right handed pitcher Phil Briggs.
He was originally drafted by the Atlantic City Gamblers in the 2005 Draft with their 2nd round pick (45th overall). In the four years since, he pitched in College and this year emerged as a prospect to keep an eye on.
The Hustlers looked past his mediocre movement (5) and his questionable control (4) and focused on what might have been the most overlooked pitch arsenal in the draft. Briggs features six plus pitches.
Slider 6 8
Curveball 4 8
Changeup 8 9
Splitter 5 7
Cutter 6 7
Forkball 7 7
If he can harness his control a bit, he could end up being the steal of the draft. The Hustlers plan to start him at Rookie Ball once signed, with a quick promotion to Class A ready to be earned.
