WHIV 2058-9- Checking the Locks: Catchers

Post by recte44 » Sat Feb 03, 2024 1:33 pm

Sure Fire Locks (1):

Claudio Morgan, R/R- Morgan finally had the breakout season the Hustlers were waiting for last year. At age 25, he batted .319/.374/.467/.841 with 3.2 WAR and made his first All-Star team. The Hustlers are working closely with Morgan this spring on the "thinking" element of the game behind the plate.

Near Locks (1):

None
*There could still be an outside acquisition here- stay tuned

Trying To Break In (2):

Tom Treveylan, R/R- Just 22 years old, Calgary drafted him in 2054, gave him all of 9 at-bats in two seasons , and then cut him loose the next season without having any appearances at all. Vegas picked him up because he is a rarity- a catcher with ok defense who can play all three outfield positions if needed. So can he hit enough to really skip AAA altogether and make the team out of Spring? He batted .455 in a September cup of coffee.

Steve Burton, R/R- Was Rockville's backup catcher for parts of four seasons before spending the 2057 season at Milwaukee (AAA). Hit .322/.391/.466/.857 there last year in 208 at-bats. Acceptable defense and threw out 31.2% of attempted steals. Maybe??

Breaking In The Back Door (1):

Gabriel Herrera, R/R- On paper, scouts say he's a hit-first catcher with below average defense and just an ok arm. Statistically, he's been a glove-first catcher with amazing CS numbers and hasn't hit at all. Probably his only real chance before the Hustlers bounty of young catchers from the 2057 draft start moving up.
