WHIV 2052.2- What Happened To The Defense?
The casual Hustlers fan has been saying "what's wrong with these pitchers?" lately. It's a fair statement given the weird results from some well established pitchers this year. Dig a little deeper and you might find this is not all on those arms. There's something far more concerning happening in the desert.
While the overall BABIP trend of the Hustlers is not good, we can look at two cases in particular that accentuate the problem. The struggles of Jay Hodge and Quintiliano Rodeia can be attributed to huge spikes in their BABIP. Hodge has allowed (to date) the most hits in the Johnson League. That's an insane statement, and there has to be an explanation behind it. There is, and it's simple. More batted balls in play are becoming hits against Hodge than outs than in years past. Not by a little...by a lot. It started to tick up a bit last season and has exploded this year:
The same trend happened for Rodeia. His surprise success last year was driven by the second lowest BABIP of his career. This year, after signing late, he has the HIGHEST BABIP of his career:
So, why is this happening??? The once vaunted Hustlers defensive unit seems to be crumbling. When they were on their amazing Monty Brewster Series run, they had plus ZR's at every position. Now, that's simply not the case.
"We gotta shore up this defense," said manager Edward Allen. "And quick."

I gotta move Geloran Jr back to second base. Played around with my infield shift sliders a bit this last sim, too.

Is it just me, or does it seem like defense in OOTP is a bit of a crapshoot?

I feel that too, or at least moreso than any other aspect even though it's arguably the most predictable in real life.lordtoffee wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 9:37 pmIs it just me, or does it seem like defense in OOTP is a bit of a crapshoot?
It also seems like BABIP is extra wonky this season.

Sometimes, setting changes can help or hurt. Not Matt’s fault or the GB fault.
