WHIV 2050.1- Tyler Traded To Edmonton

Post by recte44 » Thu Feb 17, 2022 3:31 pm

Traded 30-year old 3B Blaine Tyler to the Edmonton Jackrabbits, getting 23-year old RHP Ron Noftall and 24-year old 3B Don Hattie in return.

The loss of Tyler is not a small one. Since coming over via trade with the Yellow Springs Nine at the Trade Deadline of 2046, Tyler has been a steady power force in the Hustlers lineup as well as a solid defender at third base. "The salary cap is always a challenge," said GM Matt Rectenwald. "Good players we would love to keep just can't be kept all the time."

In return for Tyler, the Hustlers recieved two youngsters on minimum contracts, both of whom still have two minor league options available.

Noftall projects as a reliever, and made his BBA debut this year, but the Hustlers see him in Triple-A Milwaukee this year. "He's got a lot to work on," explained Rectenwald. "We love his arm but we want him to keep developing, and we also want to see how he pitches against left-handed hitters as a reliever."

Lefty swinging Hattie has more of a shot to play in the BBA this year. With Tyler gone, there will be a bunch of guys angling for playing time at three spots (third base, first base, DH). Hattie has all of the tools to be a great left-handed hitter, but has failed to really produce as such throughout his minor league career. "He'll get a shot to make the team," Rectenwald said.

Looking at the battle for the three spots right now, before free agency:

- Abu Wamakota will either be at first base, where he played in 2049, or possibly move back to his natural position of third base.
- Jen-kan Zhai will either play first base, or be the DH. He's likely to earn a full time spot this year.
- Youngsters Scotty Beemeup and Vaughn Thomas will also be in the mix for at-bats at the DH spot. They would make a natural platoon, aside from the fact that Beemeup (a righty hitter) shows tendencies of being a better hitter against RHP than LHP.
- Then there are guys like Hattie and Russ Sandhoff who could be contenders at the hot corner as well.

This will be one of the two really impactful decisions to be made before Opening Day 2050 for the Hustlers. The other has to do with the pitching staff....stay tuned.
