Pitchers:
Not a lot to decide here. The biggest decision is how to use Jay Hodge. Should he start? Then Kevin Morales starts in the bullpen. Should he relieve? Then Morales starts. No decision has been made yet.
The first four of the rotation are set: Martin Ross, Nathaniel Davis, Stan Cyr and Brian King. Either Hodge or Morales should fill the last spot.
With either Hodge or Morales, Bang Pi, Dominic Thompson, Eugenio Asseldonk, Wayne Dorsey and Eru Likiliki figuring as locks in the Hustler bullpen, there are essentially two spots available, maybe three if the Hustlers have to carry an extra pitcher as to not lose him to the waiver wire. Alvin Chartrand, a Rule 5 pick, is a near lock as the club is invested in him as a bullpen arm. This leaves three pitchers without options: Horst Duineveld, Rich Martinez and Armando Castro. There are even more deserving candidates who will almost certainly be sent to Milwaukee (AAA) to start the year because they still have minor league options remaining: Mike Jayne, Eric Buckson and Ricardo Suarez lead this group.
Catchers:
This figured to be an open and shut deal with Calvin Johnson as the starting catcher and Geoff Combs as his backup. Scouts are seeing a decline in Combs, however, and the Hustlers may be on the lookout for other options.
Infielders:
Let's start with the locks. Stewart Turton is the starting second baseman, Blaine Tyler is the third baseman and Damek Korbel is the shortstop. First base? The Hustlers expected Abu Wamukota to push for more playing time, which he has, but Carlos Fernandez has been on fire all Spring and is fighting to keep his spot. Carlos Santillan will be part of the equation at DH, however he hurt his hamstring and will miss the better part of two months. Juan Luis Manuel was re-signed and will likely be a utility guy, unless non-roster players Luis Cruz or Yen-ning Chaim can unseat him.
Outfielders:
First of all Tom Rudge hurt his hammy, so he'll probably miss April. That leaves Jim Ashford and Kidane Ata as two of the three outfielders, with Roman Gabriel figuring to be first in line to fill in for Rudge. Juan Valverde returns to the Hustlers as a free agent signing to fill a utility role. Can Jen-kan Zhai make the leap to the big leagues earlier than originally projected? He hasn't hit much in spring, so the Hustlers could look back to free agency to find another bat. Ricardo Gonzalez was the primary outfield reserve last year, but with Gabriel and Valverde added he figures to start the year in Milwaukee (AAA).

Re: WHIV 2048.9- Setting the Opening Day Roster
Having to keep all those pesky 50 Relievers on your roster because they're out of options and you fear waiving them because someone will pick them up is so problematic. I have 2-3 myself I'll probably keep on the roster to start over someone just because I don't want to lose them.
Maybe just hope they have a bad outing or two so people view them as no good so they clear waivers. HAH

Re: WHIV 2048.9- Setting the Opening Day Roster
To your point- is it the end of the world if I lose an Armando Castro or a Horst Duineveld? Not really at all. I just hate losing players without getting something (anything!) back.7teen wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 1:37 pmHaving to keep all those pesky 50 Relievers on your roster because they're out of options and you fear waiving them because someone will pick them up is so problematic. Agreed. And was probably the point I was trying to make and did so in a poor way.recte44 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 8:16 pmTo your point- is it the end of the world if I lose an Armando Castro or a Horst Duineveld? If you're like me, you want to play the younger guy you think is better but don't want to lose that 50 guy to the waiver wire. Which leads to that choice of perhaps fielding a lesser bullpen to not lose a guy or saying screw it and risk losing the guy for nothing on the waiver wire.

I keep looking at my cuts and I can't help but thinking it's quite insane to send Buckson down just so I can keep one of these guys.
