WHIV 2045.14- Turton Blossoms in Second Half

The last couple of years in Las Vegas it has been quite apparent that their middle infield would have to be shored up. Big time. The addition of Damek Korbel has made a huge, huge impact at the shortstop position. While Korbel is getting all of the headlines, it's easy to overlook the second year gains that Stewart Turton has made this year.

Last season, Turton got his feet wet in the big leagues while playing shortstop. His defense left a lot to be desired (-9.6 ZR), even though scouts thought he had all of the tools to succeed there defensively. When the Hustlers were able to acquire Korbel from New Orleans in Spring Training, the move had a ripple effect on the club defensively. With Korbel at shortstop, that meant that Turton could move to second base, and Carlos Fernandez could move to first base. One trade, three positions upgraded.

Turton has been a huge asset at second base, posting a +6.4 ZR there this year. "I don't think anyone would be upset with a 15 point swing in Zone Rating," said GM Matt Rectenwald with a chuckle.

Offensively, he's a solid contributor that has shown improvements across the board this year. "We think Stewart should be a pretty consistent .280/.340/.450 kind of bat, 25 homers and 25-30 doubles a year," said Rectenwald. "Just a solid, solid player." Indeed, and one that should be a Hustler for years to come.

His 2044 numbers say he was probably fine overall, but maybe up a year too early for "optimal" value.

Turton is going to be a good one, though. Or already is. :)
