GM: "Alright everybody. The trade deadline is looming and the team is sitting at exactly .500 in the standings. We are clearly a seller at this point. We've already gone over this but the pitching depth just wasn't there. We received a nice injection of young pitching talent at the lower levels of the minors now so in a few seasons we should be seeing some of the fruits of all these trades."

Soik: "If the Hustlers are a seller as you say, care to explain why you just potentially added some 50 million in salary?!"

GM: "Oh so you noticed that little deal huh. Can't get anything past you. Yes we did indeed pick up 3 veteran arms, 2 of which have incredibly steep salaries. Going back to Long Beach were young reliever Ricardo Moreno and journeyman starter Juan Lopes. Moreno while only 24 seems to have topped out his abilities. He's a valuable arm in the pen on account of his contract but the moment arbitration strikes he loses a lot of value. If we are being totally honest, once the team is really ready to compete he would be gone anyway. Lopes was a waiver wire pickup a few weeks back and while he did ok, he certainly hasn't blown away the coaching staff. Lopes is just about to turn 28 so much like Moreno, he wouldn't be around in our window anyway. We feel these 2 are a small price to pay to add a bonafide starter in Cris Rios, a grizzled vet like Jimmy Greenwood, and another reliever in Diogo Lindt who is having a fine year. Of course the big price tag here is the potential salary money to Rios and Greenwood. Yes if both guys execute their player options it represents 34 million of committed salary next season. We figure its a good gamble. Rios might actually opt out in search of one last long term deal and Greenwood is the kind of vet that is worth having around to teach the youngsters."

Goldie: "18 million seems steep for a mediocre bullpen arm."

GM: "Maybe. We've already looked ahead at the upcoming free agent class. Its not exactly chock full of pitching depth. So any depth available that we might pursue would likely be overpaid anyway. So doing this now gives us a little edge over just waiting til the offseason. If Rios and Greenwood can come over and recapture some of the magic as they say, we very well could sneak into that 4th playoff spot."

Goldie: "Whoa seriously?"

GM: "Yes seriously. There are a ton of teams fighting over just a few spots but almost all of them teams have flaws. So why not us? If this move truly re-stabilizes the bullpen and Rios proves to be the kind of starter we think he can be, why not? The offense is there and we owe it to both our players and the fans to give it a shot. We obviously have to keep an eye on the long term so we can't go shell out for a Don Smith type move, but our strength going into the deadline was our cap space and we just leveraged it. Come on people get excited. Leroy!"

Jenkins: "JJJJJeeeeennnnnnkkkkkiiiiiinnnnnnsssss!!!!!!"

GM: "Hell yea Leroy. We gotta have someone around to hold down the fort til the kids arrive right? Who knows maybe we will do something else yet before the deadline..."
