WHIV 2039.4- Hustlers Choose One in Rule 5
December 16, 2038

When it comes to the annual Rule 5 Draft, usually the Hustlers are reporting about players they have lost to other clubs. This year, it's different as Las Vegas selected one player while losing none.

To prepare for the draft, the Hustlers added four players to their 40-man roster, protecting them from Rule 5 selection. Dean Rackham (P), Roman Sanchez (P), Herve Billy (OF/IF), and Sergio Tovar (C/OF) were added to the 40 man. There were rumors Rackham was going to be a certain Rule 5 selection, so his addition was anticipated. Vegas couldn't ignore the pure potential of Sanchez, despite his obvious limitations. Billy is thought of as a utility option for the big league team, and with only one catcher on the 40-man going into the draft the Hustlers opted to protect Tovar as well. This left a couple of open 40-man slots going into the Rule 5, and the Hustlers decided to use one on a player in the draft.

With the 24th pick of the first round, the Hustlers selected Jose Ramos from the Seattle Storm organization. Ramos, 23 years old, is a right-handed power pitcher who was originally a 6th round pick by Seattle in the 2034 Ammy Draft. His overall numbers in the minors have been just shy of outstanding, however Ramos hasn't made it to the AAA level yet. He projects as a reliever, with a 94 mph Fastball and plus Splitter. His changeup is as pedestrian as they get, and the Hustlers have already discussed the option of converting him into a reliever full time and asking him to drop that pitch, which would also reduce his great stamina, but club sources indicated that move wouldn't come this season. Ramos also has great intangibles, profiling as a clubhouse leader with outstanding work ethic, high loyalty and low greed (though low adaptability). He will be given an opportunity to crack the Opening Day Roster, however breaking into the Hustlers bullpen could be a tall order.
